Week (end) agenda | 29th Aug – 4th Sept

One of my favorite months starts this week. As much as it can be a cliche, September means a fresh start for me, and for Amsterdive that will be no figure of speech. What’s more, I have the feeling this month can really set the tone for the upcoming year, so let’s make sure to start it in the best of spirits, with uplifting events. And, what’s better, most of them are entrance free.

This is my selection for this week. Don’t forget that every name listed redirects you to the event’s website, and free events are signaled as well.

I Amsterdact | Home of Art, Museumdistrict | free

1st Sept – 18.00

Home of Art will be hosting performance acts from 18.00 on, on Thursday. These sound especially interesting because they use the public space as a trigger to reflect on a few specificities of life in Amsterdam, such as tourism and multiculturalism.

Summer Breeze | Westergasterras, Westerpark

1st Sept – 20.00

If you like caribbean dances, this is a not-to-miss event. It is the end of season party: there will be workshops, salsa live-bands, and plenty of dj’s. I’m sometimes a bit reluctant to attend this sort of events, but i found the atmosphere at the Summer Breze nights very pleasant, so i’d definitelly give this party a go.

Benefit Kriterion Monrovia | Kriterion Cinema | free (donation-based)

2nd Sept – 19.30

The art-house movie theater Kriterion is entirely runed by students, and it is, in itself, a wonderful location. The cool thing is that Kriterion supports other similar projects around the globe and, this time, they are organizing a benefit night for a new Kriterion in Monrovia, Liberia. This party is starting with a documentary projection, and will be followed by an auction. Dj’s will make us dance until 3 a.m.

Food Night | Javastraat, Indische Buurt | free

3th Sept – 15.00

Not so long ago, the Javastraat became the last hype in Amsterdam, street-wise. The organization of a Food Night seems logical, having into account the mix of cultures you can (still) find in the Indische Buurt. There will be music at the Javaplein as well, and the event will be going on until 00.30.

Binnenprefeest | Binnenpret, A’dam South | free

3th Sept – 12.30

The Binnenpret is a squatted old tram garage turned into non-profit cultural center. Their agenda for this day-long event is immense and includes workshops, music, theater shows, exhibition openings, dj’s… you name it. Vegan food will be available!

Badplaats Summer sessions | Volkshotel | free

This is a popular event in town which i’ve been, for a long time, curious to attend. There are supposed to be a few hot tubs, a sauna, the view of the 8th floor of the Volkshotel, and a live band. Yes, that’s right, you can get into the tubs if you bring your swimming gear along. Plus, enjoy the blues of the Dust Bowl Drifters. Having all this into account, i expect CROWDS. Let’s see.

Amsterjam | Noorderlicht, A’dam NDSM | free

4th Sept – 19.00

Every first Sunday of the month, the collective Amsterjam organizes an evening of spontaneous music at Noorderlicht. It is a jam, so everyone can join the musicians and play. How great is this?
