When What Where April

April prepares her green traffic light and the world thinks Go”.
Christopher Morley

Dear all,

Allow me to highlight three of the events I am SUPER looking forward to this month:

First of all, SHFT Happens, on Saturday 7! A one-day immersion where work feels like a retreat, where you get energy & nourishment from focusing and getting stuff done. Amsterdive partnered up with SHFT and we’re giving away discount codes – check all the info below.

Then, in the category of dancing as if there was no tomorrow, an evening of Lumberjacks in Hell at Noorderlicht, on Saturday 14, with the bright presence of DJs Mr Mendel, Marcel Vogel & Tom Noble!

Finally, in the category of culture, the concert “Symphonic Cinema: Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé’ a concert + film at Het Concertgebouw, courtesy of the Amsterdam Culture Club.

A cool thing? You can join me for all three of these programs – let me know if you do! And for now, enjoy the cultural agenda, and feel free to add any cultural suggestion of yours in the comments down below. 💫

When | What | Where November

Amsterdive’s cultural agenda WHEN | WHAT | WHERE was taken over by aliens!
(well, not, but almost)

Ladies & Gentlemen,

I’m delighted to present you a cultural agenda for November curated by a handful of my favorite fellow bloggers (and instabloggers)! Andra Stefan from Amsterdamming, Carole Rey from Good Enough Darling, Dana Marin from Amsterdamian, Dani Bordiniuc from Coffee & Stories, Deepa Paul from Instagrambloggers, and, last but certainly not the least, Jan Arsenovic from Jan in Amsterdam, all accepted my invitation to participate in the Blogger’s Edition of When | What | Where! 💥

It feels AMAZING to have these fine creatives onboard with me. You might know some of them already. They’ve been commitedely documenting and creating content about Amsterdam and The Netherlands by means of articles, photography, video, even books (!). So this is my present for you, guys (better said – our present). After all, Sinterklaas is just around the corner. Make sure to visit the blogs of these marvellous six and check out what they’ve been up to.

With no further ado, let’s take a look at what is getting this team excited for the upcoming month!

Weekly Agenda | 17th – 23rd Apr

[The Weekly Agenda is a selection of cultural events for the city of Amsterdam, with an alternative feel. An activity per day, or sometimes two if they can be combined with each other. Every listed event includes a link to its website, and free events are signaled as well. For updates please like Amsterdive’s Facebook page]

Dear all,

How complicated can it be to fully go for it? You know, not just half time, not in the way of the hobbyist, but full on, or – if you want – professionally. Whether we believe the path we’d like to follow is an impossible one, whether we have no clue where to start, whether we think we are not good enough to do it. Or maybe our path is not carved yet, and we don’t really have examples around to get guidance from. And then there are the others, all the people who doubt, who project their fears on us, who urge us to stay on the safe side of the road “for our own good”.

Don’t listen.

More than ever dig into yourself, and search for that flame which is burning inside. Trust the direction it propels you into. Even if you can’t see the road ahead. Even if you can’t exactly picture the outcome. Even if you can’t (not yet) put everything into beautiful and logical words which would impress a TEDx audience. Or your parents for that matter.

Just go.

(and, in the meanwhile, do get some inspiration and some uplifting energy from the events below)

Dear all, I am extremely excited about the partnership between We Are Public and The Opera Forward Festival. If you are in the possession of a WAP pass you can go watch the best of contemporary opera for über friendly prices which vary between 5 and 15 euros. It is unreal. Yesterday I saw Caliban at the Compagnietheater and it was impressive to realize how opera can suddenly be so light and innovative. Upcoming Tuesday and Wednesday there is more (amongst other exciting activities) – check it out below.

Enjoy the sun!

Weekly agenda | 6th – 12th Mar

Last week, I was struck by how such a personal article as “On being a woman in Amsterdam” reasoned with so many minds out there. I couldn’t possibly expect all the reactions of support and enthusiasm, especially because I had mentally prepared myself for some backlash. Thank you very much you all for the feedback – also to the ones who had a different point of view, and dared to enrich the conversation. This exchange of opinions makes our work on this side of the screen at once gratifying, and definitely less lonely. It is amazing to feel one can be ‘of service’ by writing something that really matters to people around. And thank you Dutch News for sharing the article!

Although the timing of this post was unplanned, it ended up falling into place because the coming Wednesday is International Women’s Day – one that reminds us of how far we have come in terms of human rights, and how much there is to do, still. Check the agenda below for the related events. Don’t forget that every listed event includes a link to its website, and free events are signaled as well. To get updates please like Amsterdive’s Facebook page. And if you did it already, you have a place in my heart, obviously.

Weekly agenda | 13th – 19th Feb

Yesterday I kept myself busy with a sort of poem. Yes, that is what I did the entire day. I got totally obsessed by it, while trying to – ingloriously – finish an article. I also did yoga, vacuum cleaned, went to the movies, and cycled half the city, in attempts to get inspired and energized for the actual article. The article remained in draft, after all, silent as the night, but the words of the poem wouldn’t stop plaguing me. Then, before bed, I did an instagram story with parts of it, and felt a slight relief. Conclusion: don’t watch a Jim Jarmusch movie on Sunday evening if you need to have an article ready the next day. Especially not one where you hear things like “If you ever left me I’d tear my heart out and never put it back”. My poem started like this: There’s a black space in my chest. That space is you.”

And let’s hover over to important stuff. This week’s cultural agenda. Don’t forget that every listed event includes a link to its website, and free events are signaled as well. To get updates please like Amsterdive’s Facebook page. And if you did it already, you have a place in my heart, obviously.

Weekly agenda | 6 – 12 Feb

If I was my own teacher ( which I am, I guess), I would tell myself,

Hey, girl, you’re late.

And then I’d reply:

I know. But I grew up in a place – Portugal -, where people quite literally say: ‘Better late than never’. So yeah, I am late with my cultural suggestions for the week. But you are just in time to take a look at it, and go make the most of your mid-week, and weekend.

My tip for you here is the Friday night program. One of the most ingenious bands of this city  – Fumaça Preta – is performing at one of my favorite venues. And I am sure it is going to be epic.

With no further ado, let’s go for it. Don’t forget that every listed event includes a link to its website, and free events are signaled as well. To get updates please like Amsterdive’s Facebook page. And if you did it already, you have a place in my heart, obviously.

Weekly agenda | 30th Jan – 5th Feb

Dear readers of mine, how are you coping with the winter-situation? Yes, I’m back to one of my beloved subjects for the sole reason that, this week, I am actually feeling the greyness of winter kicking in. While last week I wrote about learning to appreciate the cold season, now, all of a sudden, I feel SO white. I can only dream of tropical rhythms, cocktails, sun-kissed bodies walking around, large smiles + bright eyes, light clothing, open shoes, long days, the scent of some coconut body lotion in the air. Something like this. While the aforementioned is not exactly around the corner, I do what I can to cheer up my mood with stuff that makes my heart beat faster. In case you’re dealing with the same heaviness, listen: it’s not going to get better if you don’t do anything about it. You have got to play an active role in this ( is it very obvious that I’m  self-talking here?)

One of my antidotes to the seasonal blues are parties were I can dance, dance, dance to some of my favorite hot rhythms: samba, cumbia, african and middle-eastern drums, turkish folk, swing, good-old rock’n’roll, you name it. That’s why you see those programs so often on the Amsterdive’s weekly agendas ( check what’s on for the coming Friday and Saturday!). Don’t forget that every listed event includes a link to its website, and free events are signaled as well. To get updates please like Amsterdive’s Facebook page. And if you did it already, you have a place in my heart, obviously.

Weekly agenda | 23rd – 29 Jan

Have you been keeping your good intents for this year, people?

Yesterday I got this message from a friend saying how much he had liked my previous story, that it was original, that he appreciated my “contemporary fairytales”, that I should definitely keep on going this way. At a moment when I’m panicking loaded with work, this incentive meant the world to me.

So, boys and girls, whatever you are into, stay strong. In case you find yourself in a down, change the game immediately. Get outside, go for a walk, do some sport, talk to an uplifting friend, go out dancing, find a cliff or a corner where to scream from, whatever works. Breathe and take it from there. The moment is now. This whole conversation is the consequence of me thinking that maybe a little reminder could give you guys that extra kick in the butt you might be in need of.

As for your leisure time, allow me to suggest a number of things I think are worth of our attention. Don’t forget that every listed event includes a link to its website, and free events are signaled as well. To get updates please like Amsterdive’s Facebook page. And if you did it already, you have a place in my heart, obviously.
