[The Weekly Agenda is a selection of cultural events for the city of Amsterdam, with an alternative feel. An activity per day, or sometimes two if they can be combined with each other. Every listed event includes a link to its website, and free events are signaled as well. For updates please like Amsterdive’s Facebook page]
Dear all,
After a week of silence, our cultural agenda is back! And you know what I learned from this week of absence? I can’t miss my own agendas anymore. I have never been a great planner and, at a certain point, I was just overscheduling myself, and having to cancel things last minute. I started putting these together for the sake of my own organization so I would have an overview of my week leisure-wise. Other than that, I wanted to have a link to redirect my friends, when they asked me about “plans for the weekend”. Here’s the menu for this week, for your amusement.
(For suggestions and comments, do get in touch via [email protected]. Enjoy!)
Mon, 1st, 20.00 | Music in indigenous universe | Teatro Munganga
Workshop. A workshop aimed at exploring the diversity of indigenous Brazilian sounds, under the direction of anthropologist/musician Magda Pucci.
Tue, 2nd, 21.00 | Ping Pong & Circus Hoppa | OT301 – free entrance
Ping pong night. Yes, you read it well. Ping pong night. With beers, djs, and a very international crowd. This week Djimbolia from Circus Hoppa (+ guest), is presenting us Balcumbia: Balcan sounds with a South American flavor.
Wed, 3rd, 14.00 – 19.00 | Italian String Instruments Show | MixTree (OT301) – free entrance
Exhibition. This one is, of course, for my musician friends. An exhibition of classical, baroque, and medieval string instruments, hand-made in Italy, from special sounding woods. Oh, and free aperitivo!
Wed, 3rd, 20.00 | Duurzaamheid van binnenuit |De Nieuwe Liefde
Talk. If you speak Dutch, you might be interested in this talk about sustainability, the main themes being the relation between climate change, the refugee crisis, and the inequality between rich and poor. The entrance for this event is free for We Are Public pass holders.
Thu, 4th, 22.00 | Latin at Pacific | Pacific Parc – free entrance
Party. Ritmo Caribeño is responsible for this evening of Cumbia-Salsa-Bossa-Latin Funk-Reggae-Dance Hall-Afro Latin, and the likes. And they also invited Jermain Bridgewater to perform live. There’s going to be some serious dancing tonight.
Fri, 5th, 21.00 | Dicht op ‘t vuur; Goedemiddag! | Noorderlicht – free entrance
Music. Goedemiddag is a ska band with an absurd approach as to their performance, and that’s exactly why I want to go see them.
Note: On the 5th of May we celebrate Liberation Day in The Netherlands so there will be various festivals and events going on. The one at the Westergasfabriek goes on the entire day, is free until 22.00, and promises to be good fun. There will be a dub sound system thing at the NDSM (Bevrijdingsdub 2017) which sounds good as well.
Sat, 6th, 10.00 | Yoga bij ‘t Blauwe Theehuis | Vondelpark – free entrance
Yoga in the park. Practising yoga on Saturday morning in the park used to be the best moment of my week, when I first joined these yoga sessions, three summers ago. This really was the seed that lead to my current steady yoga practise. AND it’s totally free!
Sat, 6th, 23.00 | Kalinichta – Edition 3 | Noorderlicht
Party. This is going to be a “musical road trip” for the explorers out there, “sliding from Balkan beats over to Greek uplifting tunes, and all the way to the belly dancing sounds of Lebanon”. Start polishing your dance shoes.
Sun, 7th, 16.30 | Clube do Samba | Checkpoint Charlie
Concert. Listening to the Brazilian tunes of Clube do Samba is truly heart-warming. This is all you are going to need to have a smooth Sunday afternoon.
Sun, 7th, 12.00 | Sunday Market 10 jaar! | Westergasfabriek
Market. This monthly fashion, art, and design market is already a classic in the Amsterdam hip market scene, with local artists and creatives showcasing and selling their work at the wonderful Westergasfabriek area. On this birthday edition, we expect serious gezelligheid.
