If I was my own teacher ( which I am, I guess), I would tell myself,
Hey, girl, you’re late.
And then I’d reply:
I know. But I grew up in a place – Portugal -, where people quite literally say: ‘Better late than never’. So yeah, I am late with my cultural suggestions for the week. But you are just in time to take a look at it, and go make the most of your mid-week, and weekend.
My tip for you here is the Friday night program. One of the most ingenious bands of this city – Fumaça Preta – is performing at one of my favorite venues. And I am sure it is going to be epic.
With no further ado, let’s go for it. Don’t forget that every listed event includes a link to its website, and free events are signaled as well. To get updates please like Amsterdive’s Facebook page. And if you did it already, you have a place in my heart, obviously.
Woe, 8th – 10th | Béla Tar – Till the end of the world | EYE
Exhibition. One of the most influential film makers of the last three decades prepared a special exhibition for the EYE Film Museum, which is seen as a last statement regarding the situation of refugees in Europe. From the 8th to the 10th, the entrance is free for We Are Public pass holders.
Thu, 9th | Nachlass – Pièces sans personnes | Westergasfabriek
Theater. A theatrical installation without people – an attempt to talk about death and the ones who are not here anymore, while paying an homage to life. This piece starts several times a day, and is part of the Brandstichter Theater Festival.
Fri, 10th, 23.00 | Fumaça Preta live | Pacific Parc
Concert. The members of Fumaça Preta ( Portuguese for “black smoke”) have their roots in Portugal, Venezuela, UK, and The Netherlands, and their influences are equally diverse. Let’s just summarize their music as ‘the wicked sounds of damnation’. See you there.
Sat, 11th, 22.00 | Rock & Roest | Roest – free entrance
Party. What I can recall from last time I went to a Rock and Roest evening is spinning, spinning, spinning. I don’t really know how to dance the rock’n’roll thing but it doesn’t matter. Someone will make you think you actually can. It feels like magic.
Sun, 12th, 15.00 | Origins 1 & 2: a Journey into Sound | Checkpoint Charlie – free entrance
Music. Two black music classes in one day, musical menu from Jamaican sounds, Rocksteady and Motown, all the way to the Funk and Hip-Hop eras. Momma’s food from 18.00 to 20.00. Did I ever tell you how I love Sundays?
