Week (end) agenda | 19th – 21th Aug

If you read the last post, you might know that i’m pretty late with posts because i have suffered an attempt of murder carried out by a wasp, last Monday morning, on my way to the coffee-place. The creature didn’t manage to knock me out but it sure turned me one-handed ( situation i still find myself in).  Prescribed medicine did the rest, keeping me high half of the time. But…!, i’m alive and standing, and just on time to gather a few suggestions for this weekend in Amsterdam (don’t forget that every name listed redirects you to the event’s website, and free events are signaled as well).

PARADE | MARTIN LUTHER KING PARK, AMSTERDAM SOUTH

Yes, the most enchanting of Theater Festivals is still running until the 28th in Amsterdam! Several theater shows to watch in a fairy-tale set up (English spoken shows included).

FIESTA MACUMBA | MELKWEG

The coolest latin party in town is a shake of merengue, reggaeton, pachanga, cumbia, dancehall, kuduro, tropical bass, salsa, bachata, latin hiphop and afro. I would sure attend it tonight (19th) if it was not for the aforementioned encounter with this tiny flying bastard.

AMSTERDAM MAKER FESTIVAL | MARINETERREIN AMSTERDAM | free

This festival for makers and wannabes starts today and lasts the whole weekend, with inspirational talks, workshops, exhibitions, installations, and local food. It seems like a wonderful source of inspiration to me. Check their program here.

STORYTELLING | MEZRAB | free

Cultural cafe Mezrab hosts its iconic storytelling evening in English, tonight, Friday the 19th, at 20.00. It is a donation-based event, in a super cozy atmosphere, and there’s Iranian home-made soup available, as usual, cooked by mommy-Mezrab, the mother of Mezrab’s founder Sahand Sahebdivani.

JUNGLE BY NIGHT | ZOOMERAVOND IN ARTIS

Jungle by Night is performing tomorrow evening at the zoo (20th). I’m not a fan of zoos but if my little niece lived in NL i think i would use this event as an excuse to take her there. The band is composed of nine musicians from Amsterdam who play what they would call an ‘afro diasporic funk’, and i can assure you it is a hell of a show.

PRINSENGRACHTCONCERT | HOTEL PULLITZER AMSTERDAM | free

A yearly classical concert which takes place next to the most well-known canal in Amsterdam is a wonderful way of immersing yourself into the city’s atmosphere. Expect to find a crowd of boats and people along the canal’s shore, tomorrow, the 20th, around 20.00.
