Weekly agenda | 6th – 12th Mar

Last week, I was struck by how such a personal article as “On being a woman in Amsterdam” reasoned with so many minds out there. I couldn’t possibly expect all the reactions of support and enthusiasm, especially because I had mentally prepared myself for some backlash. Thank you very much you all for the feedback – also to the ones who had a different point of view, and dared to enrich the conversation. This exchange of opinions makes our work on this side of the screen at once gratifying, and definitely less lonely. It is amazing to feel one can be ‘of service’ by writing something that really matters to people around. And thank you Dutch News for sharing the article!

Although the timing of this post was unplanned, it ended up falling into place because the coming Wednesday is International Women’s Day – one that reminds us of how far we have come in terms of human rights, and how much there is to do, still. Check the agenda below for the related events. Don’t forget that every listed event includes a link to its website, and free events are signaled as well. To get updates please like Amsterdive’s Facebook page. And if you did it already, you have a place in my heart, obviously.

Mon, 6th, 21.00 | If the sun explodes | Het Ketelhuis

Film. The trailer from Hanna van Niekerk’s first film brings us an indie “into the wild” set, with love story included. That’s enough for me to decide I WANT TO SEE THIS. In case you hold a  We Are Public pass, until Wednesday the 8th you get free entrance to this film.

Tue, 7th – Thu, 9th | Béla Tarr – Till the end of the world | EYE Filmmuseum

Exhibition. One of the most influential film makers of the last three decades prepared a special exhibition for the EYE Film Museum, which is seen as a last statement regarding the situation of refugees in Europe. From the 7th to the 9th, the entrance is free for We Are Public pass holders.

Wed, 8th, 19.00 | Meer dan Muze: Mama Cash x Stedelijk | Stedelijk

Exhibition + talks. This is a special program for Woman’s Day, in which we will see work from female artists, talk about what’s going on in their minds, and gender related issues. The Indian artist Nalini Malani is tonight’s special guest.

Thu, 9th, 19.00 | Offscreen: de invloed van online leven op offline bewegen | Stadsschouwburg

Talk. For the Dutch speaking creatures amongst us: is our online presence responsible for an imbalance in our current ways of communicating? In what way does it manifests in terms of identity, behavior, and the expression of emotions? This is what is going to be discussed at the SSBA Salon, at the Stadsschouwburg.

Thu, 9th, 22.00 | Funk at Pacific Parc: The Mothership | Pacific Parc – free entrance

Party. We want to dance, don’t we? The Pacific people promised to turn the place into a dirty heaven of funk tonight. This is all we need to know.

Thu, 9th – Sun 12th |  Cinedans Dance on Screen Festival | EYE Filmmuseum

Dance film festival. The past, present and future of dance, in film format. Dance films, dance shorts, premieres, an international student competition, documentaries, you name it. This year special focus is “Practice & Potential”.

Fri, 1oth – Sun 12th | The Amsterdam Coffee Festival 2017 | Westergasfabriek

Coffee festival. An all coffee everything event: music, art, food and coffee pairing, latte art, workshops, and tastings. And, of course, the Dutch Barista Championship. A festival on the developments in the scene – for the coffee geeks out there.

Sat, 11th, 13.00 | Women’s March | Amsterdam

Women’s March. A march for equality, diversity, unity. Starting at Dam Square, all the way to Museumplein. Make sure to be present at the Dam at 13.00 to hear the guidelines and principles of this movement. We must have the power to control our bodies and be free from gender norms, expectations and stereotypes. Read more here.

Sat, 11th, 07.00 | 24H Oost | East Amsterdam

Neighborhood festival | 24 hours East is a real celebration of East Amsterdam, with all its different faces and flavours. There will be concerts, food stalls, exhibitions, workshops, amonsgt other activities. The perfect occasion to explore the most multicultural of Amsterdam’s boroughs.

Sat, 11th – Sun 12th | IJ-Hallen 11+12 maart | NDSM Werf

Flea-market | The coolest flea-market on earth takes place this weekend again, at the NDSM Werf. Are you in need of new items/outfits for upcoming parties? Or some exquisite furniture for your new home? GO. THERE.

The lecture “de invloed van online leven op offline bewegen” sounds interesting. Too bad I can’t make it. And now I need to get myself motivated for yet another women’s march. Until men stop saying: “If God wanted a way for us to have sex without getting pregnant, he would have made one.” we’ll keep marching.
