[The Weekly Agenda is a selection of cultural events for the city of Amsterdam, with an alternative feel. An activity per day, or sometimes two if they can be combined with each other. Every listed event includes a link to its website, and free events are signaled as well. For updates please like Amsterdive’s Facebook page]
How complicated can it be to fully go for it? You know, not just half time, not in the way of the hobbyist, but full on, or – if you want – professionally. Whether we believe the path we’d like to follow is an impossible one, whether we have no clue where to start, whether we think we are not good enough to do it. Or maybe our path is not carved yet, and we don’t really have examples around to get guidance from. And then there are the others, all the people who doubt, who project their fears on us, who urge us to stay on the safe side of the road “for our own good”.
More than ever dig into yourself, and search for that flame which is burning inside. Trust the direction it propels you into. Even if you can’t see the road ahead. Even if you can’t exactly picture the outcome. Even if you can’t (not yet) put everything into beautiful and logical words which would impress a TEDx audience. Or your parents for that matter.
(and, in the meanwhile, do get some inspiration and some uplifting energy from the events below)
Mon 17th | Monk (Ties Schenk) | FC Hyena, Het Ketelhuis, Kriterion
Film. I can highly recommend you go watch Monk, a Dutch drama (mainly Spanish spoken) which depicts a highly dysfunctional family going about their struggles, and trying their best not to collapse. Deeply moving.
Tue 18th, 20.30 | Silence is also sound | Dokzaal
Performance. The event reads: “Toshikazu Marumachi is a Japanese performer, raised in the Noh Theater. This evening he will share his long experience in Japanese art, having developed his own unique style of performance in sound and movement.”
Woe 19th, 19.00 | Manifestation in support of LGBT’s in Chechnya | Homomonument
Protest. Recent events involving persecution, torture, and murder of gay people in Chechnya definitely should propel us to action. Come join the demonstration at the gay monument next to the Westerkerk. An initiative of Russian and Dutch LGBT activists, COC Nederland, and Amnesty International.
Thu 20th, 17.30 | Eskorakas – Live | Concerto Recordstore – free entrance
Concert. I got to know Eskorakas by chance at Nieuwe Anita. Their sound is at times dark and whimsical, always cool and raw. And they have a proper riot girrrl on the lead. Go see them if you have the chance.
Fri 21st, 08.30 | CreativeMornings Amsterdam: Beyond | OBA – free entrance (signing up is mandatory)
Breakfast lecture. It starts with breakfast at 08.30, and then there’s a lecture by arts and design writer Bob Alderson on the theme “Beyond”. Because I loved their intro I’ll transcribe it below, so that you get as inspired as I did.
What a trait to embody. Without the urge to go beyond perceived limitations or boundaries, we would be a dull, stagnating species indeed. The price to go beyond anything is never free; we’re called to face our fears, and the reward of reaching that next level is the privilege to do it again.
Fri 21st, 22.00 |Alta Cumbia Nite | OT301
Party. A cumbia night is always a good excuse to go shake the dark energies out of our bodies, and allow some good old romanticism in.
Sat 22nd, 13.00 | ★Buurtboerderij Zaaifeest★ | Buurtboerderij
Sowing festival. The most beautiful of ‘urban’ farms in the whole world is organizing a sowing festival: a full day of yoga (in its multiple forms), art, music, and nourishing food, in the heart of a real neighborhood community.
Sat 22nd and Sun 23rd, 09.00 | IJ-Hallen | NDSM
Flea market. Guess what, this weekend I will be selling at Europe’s biggest flea market. Come say hi, and hunt for some deeply essential things such as new clothing and some more paraphernalia to adorn your house with.
